This is the section of mostly miscellany lol.
We went on an adventure through Blackwood River National Park
never actually seeing the river.
Stopped by the farm properly we always admire on Caves Rd,
because it's just somehow very beautiful to us.
There was a tiny welcome swallow
about the size of my little finger,
where we were staying.
So there's photos of him too.

Prevelly - we went here between storms, and ate sushi, while watching the very choppy surf. We watched two women with their two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels go to take the spaniels for a walk on the green, and the spaniels quickly looked very unimpressed to be in such a windy, salty, spray-filled place.

Look I'm very enamoured by Grey (White) Goshawks
and White-Bellied Sea Eagles.
Pretty sure the White-Bellied Sea Eagle is a juvenile,
that's nearly got all it's adult feathers.
The White Goshawk is the white morph of the Grey Goshawk.
It is not an albino.
It is the only regularly naturally occurring entirely white bird of prey in the world.

Despite it being windy and rainy,
it was a good day for seeing the raptors.
I think the wind stirred their spirits a bit.
This batch of photos includes:
the Boobook owl, the Powerful Owl, the Tawny Frogmouth, the Brahminy Kite and the Wedge-Tailed Eagle (which it's still legal to hunt in most states, making it the most persecuted / killed eagle in the world)

Eagle's Heritage is Australia's largest raptor rehabilitation centre.
About an eighth of it is accessible to the public.
The rest is private.
Where possible birds are rehabilitated into the wild.
This section focuses on Ivy the Barn Owl
and the Black Kite (which is not black, but brown).

Sons kimchi, tiny bartlett pears, arlet apples, lamb ragu, spinach & ricoota ravioli, smoked paprika pappardelle, pita, Greek chickpea salad, spanakopita, crabapple verjus (suddenly several Tudor recipes become possible!), shishito peppers, figs, and pawpaws.

Ran into [personal profile] temve and [personal profile] ell finally -- they shop much later than I do usually, but I had an early eye doctor appointment. I need to start planning autumn outings, as the Noir City DC film fest is coming up, as well as VelocityDC Dance, the new Synetic Theater season, the Takoma Park Street Festival and probably a dozen other things...

Due to fairly dismal weather
(yay dismal weather!)
we saw no fairy wrens on this holiday.
But we still got to see some very pretty birds
and one very bond New Holland Honeyeater,
while at The Berry Farm.

Friend!

We watched the sunset at Prevelly,
on the first night.
We worried the sunset would be pretty boring actually,
but high haze due to smoke burn-off gave it all
a kind of post-apocalyptic feel.
Which was awesome.

I harvested two of the candy roaster squash today -- on was 8lb and the other was 13.5lb.

Someone stole the third one out of the garden sometime in the last week -- so I have a terrible neighbor, somewhere.

The table gold acorn squash are progressing well. I might harvest one of those soon as well.

I went with [personal profile] greenygal to Small Press Expo today. [personal profile] pleasance was supposed to come put came up sick; [personal profile] greenygal got her hardcopies of Check Please!.

There was, as always, a lot of incredible talent on display! The stand-out for me was the art for Return of the Dapper Men (available from TopShelf)-- I talked to the artist Janet Lee brief, and looked a some pages of artwork she had brought. It's decoupage!

Also, I picked up an A to Z minicomic of dinosaurs. It was adorable, and I wound up talking to the artist about opposite birds. There weren't nearly enough dinosaur or science books this year, in my opinion, but I admit it's a niche interest.

When we were gearing up to leave, we chatted with a librarian from NY (city or state, I don't know) about some of the middle-readers we'd seen. She was there on a press pass, so I hope she can get a good story and write-ups for some of the more interesting books into the library trade publications. There are a lot of really interesting and diverse works out there that need more exposure.

I figure that someone else will nominate the Goblin Emperor and Gargoyles (tv), but I'm likely to be the only one interested in An American in Paris (what happens to ANYONE else in the cast after the end of the movie?!) or The Limehouse Golem.
